‘We are the nectar’

The Doctor curtly shook her head. ‘I’m afraid he’s both very much more and very much less than that. He’s not a person at all. It is a projection into this universe from outside space and time.’
‘A tool of higher powers?’ The Bull’s eyes lit up. ‘An avatar?’
‘I’m afraid not. At best a tool of lower powers: an atavar. In fact he’s just a proboscis, a butterfly’s nose; and the Earth is a flower.’
‘And so what’s the nectar?’ the Bull muttered.
‘We are the nectar,’ said the Doctor. ‘We are.’

Six | Those Who Listen, Those Who Speak (pt. 2)

Last time . . . The Doctor explained the structure of space, time and eternity to Sara; meanwhile, in the United Nations building, Fatima searched for her missing sidekick: and was kidnapped by two goons.

Slight factual error on internet

A correspondent writes:

In the first chapter the gravedigger wonders about the influence of the abbey over the Masons…. is Zurich not totaly Protestant? No abbeys there since the 16th century?

What can I say but: Guilty as charged, m’lud. I’ve never even knowingly been in Switzerland, and pretty all my info is coming off Google Earth and Wikipedia. So, there was an Abbey on the north end of Lindenhof Hill, apparently, until it was demolished following a night of the living dead at the turn of the 19th century. But the idea that it actually was in use – that was just a pure flight of assumption.

I can’t imagine how dumb this all looks to people who know Zurich: but from my perspective, Switzerland, outerspace – all pretty much on a par at this time, captain.

‘You’ll figure it out, Boss,’ Danny said, and switched to English: ‘You’re the number two lady detection agency.’
‘I’m number one’, said Fatima.

Scientific ethics . . .

‘No. Scientific ethics tells us that the least valuable person must be sacrificed.’ In the dim light, he looked calmly from the cleaner to Sara; and his eyes gleamed.

The Doctor will call

Snow is foaming across York’s slate roofs as I write this.

The world’s bones are fractured: broken into rich and poor; ice-locked and sweltering; the listeners and the listened-to; the living and the dead.

Where is the bone-setter who can heal these breaks? Can the patient be persuaded that its fever, left unchecked, will devour it?

The Doctor will call.

But – this shadow! That has fallen across our hearts – is it the shadow of humanity’s collective guilt? Or is something yet more terrible drawing close to the surface? Some kraken that will beshadow the stars themselves?

The snow has ended. But this story will shortly begin.
